I’ve left Spain inspired. After exchanging ideas in customer meetings and strolling through the exhibition space, I truly believe Mobile World Congress 2018 showcased how the foundation of today’s world is creating a more promising future and how mobile is inventing novel ideas and inspiration for tomorrow. Here are some of my highlights:
۵G is ready for its Day. IoT is accelerating at breakneck speed, global demand for higher and higher bandwidth is relentless as organizations seek to transform their digital infrastructures. To unlock the 5G potential, CIOs will need to evolve into strategic architecture leaders focused on delivering flexibility and scalability which is needed to create, operate and monetize new services.
Compute at the Edge will change everything. The revolution at the Edge has begun. As sensors become increasingly ubiquitous, connectivity becomes universal, and distributed intelligence becomes the norm, the ability for enterprises to use data to reshape their customer experience, redefine their workplaces and reimagine their operations will no longer be an opportunity – it will be necessary for survival.
AI can’t be stopped! If 5G was the necessary development everyone was talking about, AI was definitely the most exciting one. Even though currently telcos are just scratching the surface, there’s a lot of opportunity to use AI in this space to solve specific problems like fraud management and network planning. Tech developments showcasing the full mobile ecosystem were on show across the exhibition halls and, as more and more AI applications are being developed, across all industries and geographies, networks must become far more intelligent and autonomous to serve this growing need.
Customers want Cloud Consumption as-everything. The increasing trend of connected devices is offering telcos an opportunity to explore cloud technologies as a significant source of expansion. To thrive, they need to leverage cloud services as providers as well as adopters. This Cloud Consumption as-everything will allow telcos to align themselves in the cloud value chain by leveraging underutilized network assets, seamlessly managing cloud connectivity and delivering new cloud-based solutions and services.
To echo the theme of Mobile World Congress 2018, mobile is creating a better future. It’s a world where technology, apps and data are driving digital transformation, reshaping markets and transforming how we live and work. In this world, success favors enterprises that can invent, reinvent and deliver new outcomes, at warp speed. I can’t wait to see how mobile’s evolution – and ours — will progress through the remainder of this transformative year, and beyond.
